Revitalizing the U.S. maritime industrial base

A resilient maritime industrial base is essential to U.S. naval readiness.

We’re investing in capacity, modernization, and a growing domestic workforce to strengthen domestic shipbuilding.

These efforts will increase throughput, reduce supply-chain risk, and ensure the nation can build and sustain maritime platforms at scale.

Transferring technology & capability

Hanwha is a trusted partner for advanced naval platforms worldwide. Through structured technology transfer, Hanwha works with allied nations to develop their sovereign capabilities and bolster their domestic industrial base in its areas of expertise, such as:

  • Destroyers & frigates – Designed and delivered for multiple navies, offering advanced air defense, anti-submarine, and strike capabilities.
  • Submarines – Proven expertise in conventional submarine design, systems integration, and lifecycle support.
  • Smart shipyards and design – Advanced technology that enables more efficient design and building for naval and commercial vessels.
  • Support & logistics vessels – Specialized ships enabling sustained operations and naval readiness.
  • Unmanned vehicles – We recently announced a partnership with HavocAI to jointly develop 200-foot autonomous surface vessels (ASV).

Maintenance, repair, & overhaul (MRO)

In 2024, Hanwha Ocean was awarded a contract to overhaul a 40,000-ton U.S. Navy dry cargo and ammunition ship, becoming the first South Korean shipyard to secure a ship MRO contract from the U.S. Navy.

Smarter, more capable ships

Beyond hull construction, Hanwha integrates advanced maritime systems—including sensors, combat systems, and autonomous technologies—into ship designs. Continued investment in modernization ensures adaptability, interoperability, and lifecycle support for evolving Navy and Coast Guard requirements.

Workforce investment & community impact

Hanwha employs a growing American workforce and is committed to upskilling its workers through training, workforce-development partnerships, and an apprenticeship program. These investments create in-demand, high-skill jobs, preserve critical industrial expertise, and strengthen the surrounding community.

Together, we’re forging tomorrow’s readiness.

By expanding domestic capacity, transferring technology, creating American jobs, and modernizing U.S. shipbuilding infrastructure, Hanwha is strengthening the maritime industrial base and supporting the nation’s long-term readiness.
